Nouvelle Vie des Enfants d’Haiti (New Life for the Children of Haiti). Established in (give date)and managed by Sadrack Francois, a citizen in good standing within the Port au Prince community, acting as both lawyer to the Mayor and licensed psychologist to the local community. Sadrack and his former wife, a local women’s’ rights worker saw a need to assist the growing number of local children orphaned by their families and living on the streets in Port au Prince. They together sought to provide a safe home for these children. During 2010 while under construction on the dormitory to the house,Haiti was struck by a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake that caused tremendous damage to Port au Prince and the surrounding areas. When Richard Spear heard of the earthquake and what had happened to Sadrack’s building efforts, he stepped into action and offered both the physical and financial support of the Cali Charity Fund to rebuild the orphanage and continues to be the primary source of financial support for Nouvelle Vie des Enfants d’Haiti .Sadrack manages a home for approximately 27 children, mostly girls and provides onsite education since the violent gangs that inhabit Port au Prince, make it extremely dangerous most days for the him to escort the children back and forth to school let alone run daily errands in an effort provide basic necessities for the children. Although since the earthquake there is very little public schooling available, luckily two of the older girls from the orphanage have elected to become teachers and have gained teaching certificates and work to educate the younger children as Sadrack supervises the in house schooling.Even with an education, jobs are hard to come byin Port au Prince and some of the grown children now offer to help at the Nouvelle Vie des Enfants, performing teaching duties and house chores for room and board.
